Spring Fling Spotlight: Comfort, Adventure & Community at Great Outdoor Store

​You don’t have to be scaling mountains or pitching tents to shop at Great Outdoor Store — and that’s part of what makes it such a special part of Downtown Sioux Falls.

Originally founded in 1983 by the Ashworth family, Great Outdoor Store (GOS) has been part of the fabric of this city for over four decades. DeAnn and Mike Echols have owned the store since 1999, though their history with it stretches back even further — to 1989.

Over the years, they’ve grown GOS into something more than a gear shop. It’s a welcoming hub for anyone who wants to feel good outside, whether that means hiking, traveling, walking your dog, or just enjoying a comfortable afternoon on your patio.

“We strive to help our community have fun and be comfortable in the outdoors, no matter the activity,” DeAnn shared. That inclusive mindset shows in the store’s carefully curated selection — yes, they’ve got technical gear, but they also stock lifestyle apparel, unique gifts, and everyday staples that make outdoor living approachable for everyone.

The team at GOS genuinely loves what they do — and they love this community. DeAnn wants people to know: “You don’t have to be a camper to shop at GOS. We have something for everyone.”

That spirit of accessibility extends to their idea of a perfect day in Downtown, too: grab a coffee at The Breaks, do a little shopping along Phillips, lunch at Sanaa’s, hit the shops at 8th & Railroad, and wrap it all up with a cocktail at Highball. Their list of local favorites includes some Spring Fling all-stars too — like Terra Shepherd and M.B. Haskett’s — and it’s clear they’re fans of the whole neighborhood.

During Spring Fling (April 12–19), Great Outdoor Store is celebrating with a fun gift-with-purchase on Saturday, April 12, and they’ll have treats available in-store all day to keep the good vibes going.
