Apps and wearable technology are becoming more and more popular amongst runners, cyclists, and triathletes. Today I am going to tell you all about my favorite app, Strava.  To use Strava, all you need is a smartphone or a GPS watch.  You then use your app or your watch to record your activity.  With the app, it will automatically upload to Strava when your workout is completed.  With your watch, it will upload to Strava when you plug it into your computer.  Now that you know a little bit about the background of Strava, I am going to tell you why I use it so often.

  1. Motivation- It is motivating to see that your buddy who you follow on Strava, got out for his morning run or even a workout.  On Strava, you can follow your friends, professional athletes, your rivals, or anyone that you want.  It is like social media for runners.
  2. New Routes- Using heatmaps and segments, you can find out where other runners in your area run most often.  Check out Strava’s global heatmap for Sioux Falls HERE.  Of course, the bike path is most commonly used but you also can see hotspots around McKennan Park, Tuthill, Great Bear, and Good Earth State Park.
  3. Segments- After you run a certain “segment” of a run, you can make it into a Strava segment.  Once a segment is created, Strava makes a list of every runner (or cyclist) who has ever run a certain portion of a run.  You can use these lists to compare to your friends or just against yourself.
  4. Challenges- Strava hosts monthly challenges that can inspire you to do more activity or to perform at a higher level than you otherwise would without it.  Currently on the Strava MTS challenge to see how many kilometers you can run this month, I am in 593rd place out of 75,000 people.  It is fun to compare yourself to other runners around the world. Strava also has a 10k and Half Marathon challenge this month as well.
  5. Stats- If you are a stat-nerd like me, you will really appreciate Strava.  It keeps track of all of your fastest times at every distance from 400m and up.  It also has detailed pace charts, elevation maps and heart rate charts. If you also cycle, it can guess your power output.
If you already use a GPS watch or carry your phone with you, I would encourage you to check out Strava.  It can make your running more fun and interesting and inspire you to become a healthier, happier and faster runner.
